Well, we had a wonderful drive through Montgomery Bell State Park. I took some pictures of Cumberland Presbyterian Church which is in the park. It was the first church of their denomination and it’s beautiful, little country church. Enjoy the pictures here.

21 Apr 2007 Campground Bottom — Sango, TN

I had my first day ever of metal detecting. Mike Mangrum, myself and son, Daniel, went to Sango, TN where Steve Belsheim owns about 19 acres of land that supposedly Union soldiers camped on for several months. It’s called Campground Bottom and we went the full length of the area twice but found no evidence of the soldiers. We did find very old nails, barbed wire, a large chain, an ax head, some sort of plowing piece, and even a bullet (it appeared to be modern). We even got to see the bridge named after Steve Belsheim!

15 Apr 2007 Ah, the Joys of Kitchen Renovation

Well, it started with the kitchen. Then it expanding to the dining room. And then the hallway, and now it includes the dining room. Talk about “scope creep.” I’ve taken some current pictures of a missing wall, no floor, no cabinets (no money !!). Oh, well. The nice thing is Jo Ann is loving it and in her element. Henrietta Hall, one of our dearest and closest friends, is our personal “decorator.” Here’s the link. Enjoy the pictures!

06 Apr 2007 Museum and Living History

MuseumYesterday (I’m writing this early in the morning Friday, April 6th), we went to two places:

Mississippi Armed Forces Museum - Camp Shelby

Landrum’s Homestead and Village

The first was a very nice museum of showing ALL of the armed forces, Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard. The base was a Joint Services base federalized in 2004 for training for Afghanistan and Iraq. It had over 15,000 artifacts and was VERY well done. I took pictures of everyone outside in front of one of the helicopters there on display. There is also a panorama of 5 photos showing all the tanks. After the museum, we went to Landrum’s. I thought it was going to be dull and boring but I was surprised. You should have seen Mike, Steve, and myself with our piles of dirt as we “panned” them for treasures. We had so much fun, we “panned” twice. We then set the ladies up and had them go to the Mystery House. The whole house is completed tilted on both sides to the back corner. We watched them walk through the house and laughed as they bounced off the walls. We finished off the day with ice cream and shakes.

The photos for the day are here.

04 Apr 2007 Natchez Antebellum Homes

LongwoodCupolaToday was spent looking at four of the antebellum homes here in Natchez. According to the southern belles who gave us the tours of the homes, Natchez had the highest per capita millionaires in the United States in 1850. We visited Magnolia Hall, Shields Town House, Routhland, and, finally, Longwood. The Natchez Pilgrimage House Tours website shows some pictures of them.

03 Apr 2007 Natchez Trace - Day Three

What a full day. It’s 10:30pm and I’m tired. We completed the Trace today. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Several memorable stops. We started out the day with a Crafts shop the ladies really wanted to see. We got there about 30 minutes early. So someone had the brilliant idea we would walk the trail. It felt too much like exercise. We then exited the Trace and using I-20, we went to Vicksburg National Military Park. I took a lot of pictures. The link for pictures is below. One memorable stop was Windsor Ruins, about 10 miles southwest of Port Gibson near Alcorn State University. It was surreal. Go to the link and read more about it. We finished the night with a very nice dinner at a Mexican restaurant walking distance from the hotel. There, we were serenaded with the theme from Pretty Woman, Sante Fe, and some song that you periodically yelled “Tequila.”

03 Apr 2007 The Devil’s Backbone — Day Two

That’s one of the names for the Natchez Trace — “The Devil’s Backbone.” There were some parts of the trace that were almost impassable. It could be, as the nickname says, “devilish.” We did quite a bit of walking on the second day. The others wore me out! We saw a beaver dam (more like a home), AND the beaver!! We went into a “dangerous” cave! We ate jelly beans! And one of the highlights of the day was meeting Per Gustafsson. He was from Sweden and was bicycling the trace, on his way to Nashville. No car, phone, GPS, anything. Just a bike and food. We talked for about half an hour and all about his trips all over the world. He was quite the colorful character. You’ll see a picture of him and the meal he was eating when we met him at the Pharr Mounds stop of the Trace. The link below are the photos for day two. Enjoy!

Well, it’s 1:20am in the morning and I just finishing getting all the pictures off the camera, edited, and uploading to the blog. I started around 10pm. Why did it take so long? Just because the sign in front of the hotel says “High Speed Internet” doesn’t mean it’s high speed. I actually had to call the 800 number to have them reset the access point in the hotel! Anyway, here is day one’s photos at the following link:
