What a full day. It’s 10:30pm and I’m tired. We completed the Trace today. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Several memorable stops. We started out the day with a Crafts shop the ladies really wanted to see. We got there about 30 minutes early. So someone had the brilliant idea we would walk the trail. It felt too much like exercise. We then exited the Trace and using I-20, we went to Vicksburg National Military Park. I took a lot of pictures. The link for pictures is below. One memorable stop was Windsor Ruins, about 10 miles southwest of Port Gibson near Alcorn State University. It was surreal. Go to the link and read more about it. We finished the night with a very nice dinner at a Mexican restaurant walking distance from the hotel. There, we were serenaded with the theme from Pretty Woman, Sante Fe, and some song that you periodically yelled “Tequila.”

That’s one of the names for the Natchez Trace — “The Devil’s Backbone.” There were some parts of the trace that were almost impassable. It could be, as the nickname says, “devilish.” We did quite a bit of walking on the second day. The others wore me out! We saw a beaver dam (more like a home), AND the beaver!! We went into a “dangerous” cave! We ate jelly beans! And one of the highlights of the day was meeting Per Gustafsson. He was from Sweden and was bicycling the trace, on his way to Nashville. No car, phone, GPS, anything. Just a bike and food. We talked for about half an hour and all about his trips all over the world. He was quite the colorful character. You’ll see a picture of him and the meal he was eating when we met him at the Pharr Mounds stop of the Trace. The link below are the photos for day two. Enjoy!
Well, it’s 1:20am in the morning and I just finishing getting all the pictures off the camera, edited, and uploading to the blog. I started around 10pm. Why did it take so long? Just because the sign in front of the hotel says “High Speed Internet” doesn’t mean it’s high speed. I actually had to call the 800 number to have them reset the access point in the hotel! Anyway, here is day one’s photos at the following link:

Natchez Trace Parkway, here we come. Jo Ann and I are going to spend a leisurely week with two other couples from church driving down the 440 mile Natchez Trace Parkway starting Sunday, April 1st. No plans — no reservations — just jumping in the minivan and going. No children, no beepers, just adult conversation and company. We’ll spend the week stopping at different stops (there are hundreds!) and just enjoying spring and God’s creation. Continue to check out the blog as I will upload pictures to my Flickr account and provide the link to that day’s pictures. I get to try out a new lens for my Canon 20D.
Finally, snow that stays on the ground for at least a day. The boys were definately excited. They didn’t have to go to school. We went out for a nice drive to Franklin and enjoyed the backroads. I took my Canon 20D to take some pictures but forget the battery charging in my office after taking pictures around the house. Not too smart. Anyway, if you want to see the set of pictures around the house, go here.
One really neat thing about having a wife who’s parents live in Topsham, Maine, is that we are only a mile from where Joshua Chamberlain’s house is located in Brunswick, Maine, just across the Brunswick-Topsham Bridge. The church, First Parish Church, where his father preached and Joshua attended is located there as well. His house is also located just across the street from Bowdoin College where he was a professor. His house is now a museum. Further down from the college is Pine Grove Cemetary where Joshua Chamberlain and some of his family are buried. To see pictures of the home, church, college, and gravesite, please visit my flickr website to see the images.
The drive was long as always and it took roughly 1600 miles. Jo Ann is happy as can be. She’s always glad to see her Mom and Dad. Also, her sister Suzie is here as well. She’s just as nuts as always (all them Rollins are nuts!). The temperature is perfect at about 74 degrees. We’re absolutely loving it. I’m using the wireless at the Topsham Public Library. Anyway, I hope I can get some photography in while here. I’ll upload the pictures to my flickr account.
Sunny and Hot! I’m getting old. Sitting in sand in the heat of the midday sun is not high on my list of fun things to do. However, watching the boys have an absolute blast in the water was worth it. The water was cold but they got used to it pretty fast and spent several hours swimming and goofing off. Anyway, we’re off to Maine next. We have a long ride ahead of us today. We are currently in a little town called Pocomoke, Maryland in a hotel. Enjoy photos at my flickr page and have a great weekend.
